Hatshepsut ruled in place of this toddler until he was eight when she became his official co-ruler. But then he died too - making her three year old step-son the pharaoh of Egypt :). So Hatshepsut married her half brother Thutmose II so that he could be pharaoh. Her father King Thutmose I died without having any legitimate sons.

This is because sons typically succeed their fathers in that era. Hatshepsut is one of the handful of Egyptian women that were documented pharaohs in ancient history.
